Matisse Funds Featured in Oregon Business Magazine

Our firm and Matisse Funds was featured this month in Oregon Business Magazine along with an expert interview with our team on fund strategy, closed-end funds, and investing for income.

Matisse Funds In the Spotlight

OBM highlights both our MDCEX and MDFIX mutual funds, which can both help expose any portfolio to a significantly diversified offering of CEFs. We believe MDFIX in particular is an industry-leading fund, designed and managed to focus solely on fixed-income CEFs.
This is thanks, in large part, to a focused strategy of targeting fixed-income CEFs trading at deep discounts to their NAVs for investment. The first of its kind, MDFIX has the potential to generate significant returns in the form of income distributions for investors, even in the most challenging markets.

During the Q&A, our team of expert fund managers goes beyond the performance and strategy of the funds into an overview of CEF insights, the history of Matisse Funds, and the investing philosophy behind them.

Investing for Passive Income

Almost a decade ago, Matisse honed in on launching a publicly traded vehicle for a specific investment goal many of our advisory clients had a particular interest in: income investing. Generating a consistent, passive income stream was one way our clients felt they could reach financial freedom before retirement.

Stemming from decades of private research, Matisse went to work crafting a product that would be beneficial to investors outside of our current clients, and in 2012 the first Matisse mutual fund (MDCEX) was born. With innovative strategies based on years of research, data, and experience, MDCEX and MDFIX have historically produced impressive returns and distributions for investors.

In times like these, we believe passive income streams are more valuable than ever. Aiming to grow and protect not just the current value of your portfolio, but also having your portfolio generate cash distributions for you can provide an additional layer of financial security when a challenging market may deplete other forms of income.

Taking Advantage of Fixed-Income Securities

We believe one of the greatest advantages of MDFIX is its resilience in a challenging market for fixed-income investors. With asset growth skyrocketing and interest rates at historic lows, many fixed-income funds have fallen by the wayside in popular investing. This presented our firm with a unique opportunity.

While many investors had written off bond and fixed-income-focused CEFs, our fund management team saw an opportunity to invest in these CEFs at historic discounts to NAV. The result is an income-focused mutual fund that has seen solid returns and distributions through 2020 (and now into 2021) in spite of the pandemic.
